October, 2025. We are relieved that due to the federal court ruling in Harvard’s favor in early September, some federal research dollars have been restored to Harvard. Read more about how the funding cuts have impacted our lab here. Nevertheless, the continued, broad attacks on higher education and academic research are compromising the United State’s position as a world leader in science, technology, and innovation. Fewer grants are being funded, and many grants have not been reinstated due to political targeting. The Trump administration has also signaled an intention to appeal the federal ruling that restored research grant money, causing significant financial uncertainty and instability.
We commend Congress for creating NIH budget proposals that maintain FY26 funding at levels comparable to FY25, in contrast to the Presidents’ original proposal to slash NIH funding by nearly 40%. We urge the House and Senate to reconcile and agree on a budget as part of the current negotiations. We call on Congress now to preserve funding to the NSF, which the House is currently attempting to cut by ~25%. Cuts to the NSF, which primarily funds basic science, would cause immediate harm to the American scientific enterprise, loss of jobs, and a reduction in the scientific workforce.
Graduate students
We’re accepting rotation students affiliated with any Harvard graduate program such as Systems Biology, Immunology, Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BBS), Biophysics or Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB).
If you’re interested, please contact Jen or Alon.
Postdocs
We are always looking for curious and creative scientists to come work with us. Please send your CV and a cover letter describing your research interests to Jen or Alon.
Undergrads and postbacs
We welcome Harvard and MIT undergrads who are looking to advance their research experience, normally starting during the summer. We are also accepting undergrads and postbacs through the HMS SysBio Summer Internship program and through SHURP. With exception of organized summer internship programs, we expect interns to commit to at least 6 months of research in the lab. Please contact us and include a 1-page personal statement if you are interested. No previous research experience is required.
